The Baines House merges Texas history with special comforts, little luxuries, and great breakfasts.
The main house was once the home of Reverend George Washington Baines, the great grandfather of the former President of the United States, Lyndon Baines Johnson. Reverend Baines was a key figure in early Texas - the founder of numerous Baptist churches and Baptist newspapers. He is credited with baptizing Sam Houston. He was the third president of Baylor University before moving to Salado.
The original Greek Revival, Texas dogtrot style home with salt box roof dates from the 1860's. Other historically and architecturally appropriate structures were relocated from Salado sites and Central Texas locations. Other structures were built using traditional carpentry, old materials, and significant architectural details. These include a pergola formed from chapel doors used at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, and old paving bricks from the streets near Baylor University in Waco. Look for the rare antique wooden windmill located by the old cistern house/chapel.
The Baines House was entered Recorded as a Texas Historical Landmark in 1981 and Entered in the National Register of Historical Places in 1983.
The Baines House - Bed, Breakfast & Beyond Inn - is owned by Rod and Sheryl Russell, who provide at tasteful - in every nuance of the word - experience that is more than lodging. Discover why many call the Baines House their favorite Bed and Breakfast destination.
